Why Learn Guitar with Charlie?

I’m Charlie Hodgson, a 37-year-old professional signed musician and tutor based in Kings Langley. I’ve been teaching guitar for over 20 years, and playing for 30+, from gigs and bands across London, weddings and luxury venues to huge concert stages, and now from my home studio or over Zoom. Whilst teaching, I regularly perform nationwide and am often experimenting with new material at home and so I bring that passion and energy to our lessons.

Whether you’re just starting out, picking up where you left off, or want to develop a more advanced style - I teach in a way that’s relaxed, friendly, and fully tailored to your goals. I work with complete beginners, kids aged 4+, teens, adults, retired learners, and advanced players prepping for exams or performances.

I teach a wide range of styles including rock, pop, alternative, blues, metal, folk, country, jazz and lots more - and I work with many intermediate and advanced students on everything from technique and improvisation to songwriting, rhythm, musicality and composing. We can deep-dive into music theory, explore sheet reading and aural skills, or create a practical roadmap focused around your favourite artists and genres.

Together we learn improvisation, musical aptitude, rhythm, reading sheet music and understanding theory (no tabs here! I am theory taught and trained)

I also support grade tuition for both adults and children through exam boards like ABRSM and Trinity College, and help students polish pieces for school plays, auditions, and special performances. Equally, if you just want to jam, unwind and play the music you love, we’ll shape things to suit that too.

I am also fully experienced with teaching SEN and neurodivergent people, including ADHD and autism, with many of my neurodiverse pupils praising my patience and ability to embrace their unique differences. I also welcome those with other special needs or disabilities, including stroke, dementia and more. All are welcome.

If you’re looking for structured progress and the freedom to play music you actually enjoy, you’re in the right place.

Curious if it’s right for you? Drop me a message, I’ll happily talk through availability.

A little extra care

I’m a talkative, friendly person who loves to make people feel comfortable and at ease, but I’m also emotionally intelligent and always tuned into what’s best for you. If you or your child is ever going through something tough, whether that’s anxiety, grief, school troubles or a mental health dip - just drop me a text in advance. I’ve had parents let me know things like a recent bereavement, and I’ve adapted the lesson accordingly with care, gentleness, and a bit of extra TLC.

Sometimes, people walk into a lesson, and the last thing they want to do is talk. They are having a rough week, and just need quiet time and focus.

I want lessons to feel like a safe space - where music can be an outlet as well as a skill. So if at any point you’d prefer a more quiet, focused lesson with minimal chat, just text me beforehand with the words “quiet session” and I’ll tailor that time for you, no questions asked.

I’ve worked with people from all walks of life and feel genuinely honoured to support each person’s journey with music - whether you’re 6 or 66, shy or confident, playing for joy or working towards something big.

Support beyond the session

I offer ongoing WhatsApp support between lessons, whether it’s sharing chord sheets for a new song you’ve fallen in love with, giving advice on your next guitar or amp, setting up a practice routine, helping you prep for a performance or just nudging you in the right direction with technique or gear. You can always reach out.

I also test your guitar setup where needed, and am happy to recommend guitars or accessories based on your level, size, budget and genre interest, whether for yourself or your child.

Sessions are flexible, personalised and friendly, and can be held in my cosy home music space in Kings Langley, or online via Zoom if preferred.

Inclusive Guitar Lessons for SEN, Neurodiverse & Disabled Learners

Tailored, compassionate guitar tuition for all abilities – from beginners to experienced players – offering accessibility and emotional understanding.

With over 20 years’ teaching experience, I’ve had the privilege of working with people from all walks of life – including those with additional needs, disabilities, neurodiversity, and mental health challenges.

Whether you’re looking for guitar lessons for someone with autism, ADHD, anxiety, depression, or dementia, or you’re simply searching for a guitar tutor who gets it — you’re in the right place. My teaching style is grounded, friendly and flexible, always adapting to suit the pace, mood and unique personality of each student. For many, lessons become more than just learning chords — they’re a space to feel calm, creative and confident.

Teaching with Heart – And Adaptability

Over the years, I’ve taught:

  • Autistic children and teens who thrive with clear structure, routine and gentle encouragement.
  • Children and adults with ADHD who benefit from engaging, fast-paced sessions with variety and movement.
  • Students with anxiety or depression, where lessons become a safe space – somewhere to breathe, reset and create.
  • Physically disabled students, including wheelchair users, where I’ve made adaptations like moving my set-up to a ground-floor lounge especially for them, for easy access.
  • People recovering from strokes, relearning motor skills slowly and steadily, using music as a form of physical and mental rehabilitation.
  • Older adults with dementia, where music becomes a powerful emotional anchor — tapping into memory, mood and joy when words may not.

I also offer inclusive parent-and-child guitar lessons, which are perfect for children with additional needs who feel more comfortable learning with a parent alongside.

Music is powerful... and so are you

Music has the ability to reach parts of us that words can’t. It can soothe, inspire, energise and heal – especially for those who feel excluded or overwhelmed by traditional learning environments.

For people living with dementia, guitar music can be incredibly therapeutic. It’s well known that music is often one of the last things the brain forgets. Playing, listening, or simply holding the instrument can spark joy, connection and familiarity — even in the later stages of memory loss.

For children and young people struggling with school or social anxiety, guitar lessons can become a highlight of their week. A chance to feel in control, to master something, and to be listened to.

And for anyone navigating neurodiversity, I believe learning guitar should never feel like a box-ticking exercise. I build real rapport with each student and make space for humour, expression and rest — whatever that looks like for them.

Accessibility & Support

  • My teaching space is in Kings Langley, with easy road access and on road parking
  • For wheelchair users or those with mobility issues, I can adapt my set-up to downstairs spaces
  • I’m happy to discuss quiet environments, sensory sensitivities and how best to support your needs
  • I’ve taught students with limited motor function, and those emotional difficulty
  • For online lessons, I offer Zoom tuition UK-wide, with flexible timings and calming, non-pressured sessions

Every lesson is private, one-to-one (unless requested otherwise) and fully personalised. I also keep in touch between sessions by WhatsApp or phone, especially useful for carers, parents, or when students need an extra bit of support.

What Others Say

I have testimonials from families and people who’ve seen and experienced real progress – not just in musical ability, but in mood, confidence and motivation. Many parents have told me I’ve become a reliable, grounding presence in their child’s week. Some say I’m “the only lesson they look forward to.”

And to me, there’s no higher praise.
