Charlie Hodgson has been teaching guitar full-time since the age of 16.
He began performing live as a teenager, and after one early gig, someone in the audience asked if he could teach their sons. That first request became the start of a full-time teaching career that has now spanned more than 20 years.
Since then, Charlie has taught over 500 pupils through his highly successful and five star rated independent guitar practice in Hertfordshire.
Alongside teaching, he is a professional performing guitarist and session musician, with experience across hundreds of gigs, festivals, private events and venues throughout the UK, Europe and beyond.
He has performed every genre from rock, pop, indie, folk, jazz, soul and punk to audiences of over 40,000 people, is represented by leading UK and luxury entertainment agencies, and has been selected for high-profile performance opportunities including prestigious venues such as Hampton Court Palace.
He has taught everyone from professional footballers at prem league football clubs, to affluent CEO’s and international families in luxury estates.
But what makes Charlie’s teaching different is not just his performance background, but the way he teaches.
Charlie is theory-trained, jazz specialist, ear-trained and musically grounded, but his approach is calm, patient, friendly and human. He believes guitar should be enjoyable, not intimidating, and that music theory should help people become better musicians, not make them feel overwhelmed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Learning Guitar As An Adult
Can adults learn guitar later in life?
Absolutely. Adults can learn guitar at any age. In fact, many adult guitar students often progress more quickly than younger learners because they are motivated, patient and actively choose to learn. Whether you’re 30, 50, 60 or beyond, it is never too late to start learning guitar. The key is finding the right teacher, building a realistic practice routine and enjoying the process rather than focusing on perfection.
Is 50 too old to learn guitar?
No. Fifty is not too old to learn guitar. Many people start guitar lessons in their 50s, 60s and even 70s. Learning guitar can improve confidence, concentration, creativity and wellbeing. The best guitar lessons for adults focus on enjoyment, gradual progress and building confidence rather than pressure or performance.
What is the best online guitar community for adults?
The best online guitar community for adults is one that combines expert teaching, accountability, support and connection with other learners. Many adult guitarists struggle not because they lack ability, but because they are trying to learn alone. Charlie’s Guitar Circle is designed to bring together adult beginners, returners and self-taught guitarists through live Google Meet sessions, practical guidance and a supportive learning community.
Can I learn guitar online with a real teacher?
Yes. Online guitar lessons are now one of the most effective ways to learn guitar. Live online guitar lessons allow you to receive real-time feedback, personalised guidance and structured learning without travelling. Charlie’s Guitar Circle combines live online guitar teaching with community support, helping learners stay motivated and make consistent progress.
How often should adults practise guitar?
Most adults make excellent progress practising guitar for 15–30 minutes several times per week. Consistency is far more important than long practice sessions. A clear practice plan and regular support from an experienced guitar teacher can often make more difference than practising for hours without direction.
Why do so many people quit guitar?
Most people do not quit guitar because they lack talent. They quit because they feel overwhelmed, isolated or unsure what to practise next. Many learners spend months watching YouTube videos and collecting information without building confidence. Learning alongside a teacher and a supportive community can dramatically improve motivation and long-term success.
What’s the difference between guitar lessons and self-teaching?
Self-teaching can be a great starting point, but many guitarists eventually reach a point where they feel stuck. Guitar lessons provide structure, accountability, personalised feedback and expert guidance. Rather than wondering what to learn next, students receive a clear path tailored to their goals, experience level and musical interests.
Best Online Guitar Lessons For Adults
The best online guitar lessons for adults combine flexibility, expert guidance and human connection. While video courses and apps can be useful, many adult learners benefit from live online guitar lessons where they can ask questions, receive feedback and learn alongside other musicians. Charlie’s Guitar Circle offers a supportive alternative to self-led guitar apps through live Google Meet sessions and ongoing community support.
Best Guitar Teacher For Adult Beginners
The best guitar teacher for adult beginners is someone who understands that adults learn differently from children. A good adult guitar teacher explains concepts clearly, builds confidence and creates a relaxed learning environment. Charlie Hodgson has over 20 years of teaching experience and has helped hundreds of beginners, returners and nervous learners build confidence and enjoy playing guitar.

Charlie has extensive experience working with neurodivergent learners and adapts his teaching style to suit individual needs, learning preferences and goals.
Guitar Lessons For Returning Players
Many adults played guitar years ago and would love to start again but don’t know where to begin. Guitar lessons for returning players focus on rebuilding confidence, refreshing forgotten skills and creating a realistic practice routine. Whether you’ve been away from guitar for five years or twenty years, it is never too late to reconnect with music and start enjoying playing again.
